Hygge Tip – Scents
Hygge – Fragrance
When family enters my house we usually come in the door from the garage into the kitchen. When I am cooking, the smell often brings a smile. Other times are less predictable. Hygge envelopes all our senses, and fragrance certainly signals a reaction in us, perhaps unconsciously. The smells in your home are always unique. I could always tell my grandmother’s home had a certain smell, not exactly good or bad but distinct. For the couple of years we had a hamster, the stink triggered cleaning of the cage, no doubt usually a few days overdue; not a desirable whiff. An interesting human trait is we can get accustomed to an odor and then we don’t notice it. It’s like living next to a train track, you really hardly hear the train after a while.
Let’s be intentional about the fragrance of our home. We have so many options for scenting the home. I think that just as we cook different foods most days, we will have variety in how our home smells. You may prefer consistency, and I admit I usually wear the same perfume every day. Sprays, candles, diffusers, plug-ins, and potpourri are a few of the vessels to deliver good scents. I’m still seeking my very favorite methods. Recently I’m trying a different tactic – a clean smelling car diffuser on an air vent in the living room. Maybe this scent will announce “I’m home” to me. And other scents may say “come in” to my guests. Be aware of your aromas. I’m searching for my favorites.
