Candles for Hygge

Candles are an essential element to hygge in Denmark.  The comfort and friendliness of a candle flame is reflected in the ambiance of hygge.  A lit candle brings a spot of focus and peace to a room.  And Danes are likely to put a lit candle in a window to cheer the people passing by, sharing the feeling of connection.

I think candles representing hygge are primarily white candles, probably not scented.  I love the colors and aroma of the vast choice of scented candles, but the critical focus for creating hygge is the flame, not the fragrance.  And just as romance movies often place many white candles for a scene, more than one candle can add to the feeling of home.  However, one white candle can do the job.

So keep a candle handy and remember to light it.  Pause and think about things you are grateful for and the people you can count on.  Nurture you hygge feeling!
